On October 2, 1979 the Department was affiliated to the Faculty of Medicine of Ankara Academy of Economics and Commercial Sciences under the presidency of Dr. Neşet GÖKOK. Our Department started to provide inpatient treatment services on November 8, 1979 with the capacity of 32 bed clinics at the Emergency and Traffic Hospital named after Dr. Muhittin Ülker.
After the establishment of Gazi University Faculty of Medicine in 1982, later on in 1986 Gazi Hospital Beşevler campus; It continued its services with 43 beds, including 37 service beds and 6 intensive care beds.
Our department assumed the central role in the establishment of the “Endoscopic andLaparoscopic Surgery Association” in 1992 and performed the first LaparoscopicCholecystectomy in June 1992.
The Department of General Surgery and Total Parenteral Nutrition Unit started toserve in 1995. The activities of the unit were transferred to the Central Nutrition Unit in 2002 with the decision of the Faculty Administrative Board.
With our expanding service area; the first kidney transplant was performed in 1996 and the first liver transplant was performed in 1998. In 2001, with a decision taken by theAcademic Board of the Department of General Surgery, the responsibility of the Departmentof General Surgery in Transplantation Surgery was abolished.
Similarly, connected to our Department; the Endoscopy Unit was established in 1997, the Stomatherapy Unit in 1998, and the Proctology Diagnosis and Treatment Unit in 2000.
In 2002 our Department was divided into four study groups as “General Surgery, Breast-Endocrine Surgery, Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery and Colorectal Surgery“.
In our Department, which provides service with 73 services and 6 intensive care beds; There are 24 Faculty Members, 2 Lecturers, 15 Research Assistants, 22 Clinical Nurses, 2 Polyclinic Nurses, 10 Intensive Care Nurses, 8 Secretaries and 32 Personnel.
Our Department receives an average of 7300 inpatients and 38,000 outpatientsanually.
Services
In our General Surgery Department; there is an Endoscopy Unit, a Proctology Unitand a Stomatherapy Unit.
In our Endoscopy Unit; Diagnostic or therapeutic endoscopy is performed for ourpatients with surgical problems. In our unit, interventionally; Procedures such as polypectomy, mucosal resection, percutaneous gastrostomy are performed.
In our stomatherapy unit; patients who undergo surgery and have a stoma are cared forand they are trained to take care of themselves after discharge. Our unit, which also works on wound care, supports Certificate Programs in the field of Stoma and Wound Care Nursing, and is also used as a training center.
